Sample Cover Letter for Resume
Most job hunters on the market have never seen such furious competition in their lives. And you’re new on the market just at a time that almost 10 percent of eligible adults is in the hunt for a job. Fortunately for you, that means lots of bad job application packets. If you’re smart, you can modify a student resume sample using just a couple of tricks that will make a cover letter that sells you even in this market.
Read on for a couple simple tactics that will jump start your job search:
Direct the readers attention to your strengths.
First, of course, that means you DON’T use a chronological format for your resume (which is the format used by most every student resume sample you’ll see). It will only underscore how much time you’ve spent in school. Use a functional format instead. Group your skills and capabilities into categories and list accomplishments from every sphere of your life (work, volunteer, education) underneath. Don’t add dates.
Second, use typographic elements on your resume and cover letter to direct attention to the good parts. On-page elements include bullets, numbers, underlines, bolding, lines made of asterisks, boxes with gray shading, and block-quotes.
Needless to say, you don’t over do it on one page. Create a simple but very strong visual format and readers won’t miss the dates.
Tables are very much underused as well. You don’t see them at all on sample cover letters for resume. And they can be put to important use chiefly when you’re submitting an application for an opening that stipulates particular criteria. Just generate a table with the criteria on left side and your capabilities on the right side. It precludes you from the tedium of saying – you require, and I have – repeatedly.
Edit your packet pitilessly.
Evaluate your cover letter against the top student resume sample you can get. It shouldn’t look comparable. It should look and read better. What features have you added (Johnson box, PS, PSS, headline, etc.) that distinguish it from a stack of similar sample cover letters for resume? How much crisper and more energetic does it read?
Paragraph by paragraph figure out how to make one sentence do the work of two. Don’t change to abridge. Edit to elucidate, clean, make stronger, and refine. Cut out each sentence that isn’t dead-on germane. Every word in your letter must expand your case, reinforce your message, and be essential to the READER (not you). If you don’t select your packet over any student resume sample, why should the recruiter?
